Wildlife Emergency Web, an online resource tool developed and maintained by Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) to assist staff involved in wildlife emergencies, is now open and accessible to all DSE, CFA, Department of Primary Industries (DPI) and Parks Victoria (PV)staff.

The site is a central repository for all wildlife emergency management information on policies, plans, training courses and resources for staff.

As a lead agency for bushfire response in Victoria, CFA staff can use Wildlife Emergency Web to prepare for and assist in the rescue of wildlife affected by bushfires.

Wildlife Emergency Web is for internal use by DSE, CFA, DPI and PV staff. It is now available via a link on the External Links page on CFA’s Intranet, and recent improvements mean that all staff can access the site without the need to register first. However volunteer firefighters will need to request approval before accessing the site by emailing WEW.Administrator@dse.vic.gov.au.

“This is an invaluable resource, helping DSE and its partner agencies to respond to wildlife emergencies quickly and effectively”, DSE Manager Wildlife Conservation and Management, Scott Lawrence said. “It has several exciting features that will improve the way we communicate and manage wildlife emergencies”.

The site has been developed by the Office of Land and Fire Information Systems Team and the Wildlife Conservation and Management Team, in the Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Division, DSE. It is modelled on DSE’s existing bushfire management tool Fireweb.

“Historically, Victoria has been lucky not to have many large scale wildlife emergency events.” Scott Lawrence said.

“However recent incidents such as 2009 Black Saturday fires where hundreds of injured wildlife were rescued during the course of the fire - remind us that we need to be prepared to manage these events should they occur. Wildlife Emergency Web assists us with that responsibility”.

During an emergency incident, staff can use the site to access all documentation and resources needed to manage the incident.

For more information visit Wildlife Emergency Web or email to WEW.Administrator@dse.vic.gov.au.
